Who really is Jesus Christ?
“A virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel… And the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace, there shall be no end…” Isaiah, 7:14, 9:6-7.
As a young believer, this was one question that troubled my mind: Is Jesus God or the Son of God? Or indeed the “Son of man” whose righteousness and obedience impressed the Almighty God so much so that He (G0d) now decided to honor him by giving him a name that is higher than all other names? Or was God just playing a smart one on the devil by taking on human form and coming down to earth as Jesus to redeem man?
Who really is this Jesus Christ?
The more I pondered onthis question, the more confused I became until one blessed day, when the Holy Spirit(the Revealer of all things) came to my rescue (John 16:13; 14:26).
He led me straight to 1 Corinthians 2:14, and I immediately came to know that the natural man with his natural way of thinking, can never understand or appreciate spiritual matters: Why? “Because they can only be spiritually discerned.” I suddenly came to realize that I would never know Jesus by studying the letters of the scriptures. No. the real personality of Jesus Christ can only be revealed!
During His earthly ministry, Jesus on several occasions introduced Himself as the “son of man,” but the bible made it clear in Philippians 2:6 that it would never have been counted against Him as robbery if He called Himself God.Why? Because that is who He is! Hallelujah.
Hear God speaking to His Son in Hebrews 1:8
But unto the Son He saith “Thy throne O God is forever and ever” a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.”
This statement of affirmation, coming directly from the mouth of the Almighty God Himself blew my mind. It shows the place of Jesus Christ in Divinity.
When Jesus asked Peter who he thought was, Peter replied in Matthew 16:16 “…Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”But take note of what Jesus said in the following verse (vs. 17), “Flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto you…” mark the word ‘revealed’.
Seven hundred years before the earthly birth of Jesus Christ, Prophet Isaiah declared also by revelation in Isaiah 7:14 that a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel – meaning God with us.
And he went further in Isaiah 9:6, 7a
“…and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be Wonderful, Counselor,The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace, there shall be no end…”
This revelation which came into exact fulfillment after about 20 generations is certainly beyond human comprehension. Neither flesh nor blood could have revealed this eternal truth to Prophet Isaiah. Long before His earthly ministry, Jesus was plainly revealed as the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the God of Heaven who will come through a virgin and dwell with the children of men.
To Apostle Paul, Jesus Christ was revealed as the Wisdom and the Power of God (1 Cor. 1:24). By revelation also, he knew that Jesus is the appointed Heir of all things (Heb. 1:2), and that in Him dwells the fulness of the Godhead bodily (C0l. 2:9). What a revelation!
Apostle Matthew knew by revelation that all power, both in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (Matt. 28:18). No wonder Jesus could look at a paralytic man in the face and declare to him “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee” (Mark 2:5). To the scribes of His days, this was blasphemy, an abomination, a thing unheard of: “God alone forgives the sins of men! How can this man arrogate to himself the powers and the acts of the Almighty God?” they reasoned in their hearts. But they were right: God alone, and nobody else has the capacity to forgive the sins of men. What they didn’t know was that God had come down into their midst in the likeness of man!
On yet another occasion, when Jesus declared to the woman that anointed His feet with ointment that her numerous sins were all forgiven, the bible records in Luke 7:49 that:
They that sat at meat with Him began to say within themselves, who is this that forgiveth sins also?
But now we know from God’s word that even on the judgment day when all men shall stand before God to give accounts of their deeds Jesus will be fully in charge as declared in John 5:22.
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.
The bible also reaffirms in II Cor. 5:10 that:
We must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ: that everyone may receive … according to that which he hath done whether it be good or bad.
Are you catching the revelation of who this Jesus is? What the Holy Spirit revealed to Apostle John in John’s gospel, Chapter 1 is that the same Jesus, who took on a physical body “and dwelt amongst us”, was indeed the God who created all things including the heaven and the earth in the beginning. Hallelujah! This also explains why Jesus could declare with audacity to the condemned criminal beside Him at Calvary, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43), His paradise. Jesus indeed has all authority both in heaven and on earth!
For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible or invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him. Colossians 1:16.
To the glory of God, the Holy Spirit has revealed this same Jesus Christ to me also, and now I have come to know Him as my Redeemer and Savior, my Healer and my Great Provider. He is my Deliverer and my Righteousness. He is my King and my All-in-all.
The conclusion of this matter is this: All of us, who are beneficiaries of His redemptive work must never look for where to draw a dividing line between Jesus and God.
If we would seek help from the Holy Spirit (the Revealer of all truths) and open our mind to receive His revelations from God’s word, we will discover that Jesus Christ and His Father are one (John 10:30)
“I and my father are one”.John 10:30
